Thermofoil And Melamine Cabinet Painting in Oakville, Ontario

A waterborne bonding primer grips slick factory faces, and doors past saving are replaced rather than painted.

Slick factory faces want a bonding primer in waterborne form ahead of everything else, since ordinary primer simply slides off. Take that step and cabinet painting grips melamine or laminate as firmly as it grips timber.

These surfaces turn up in cabinet painting work everywhere in town: melamine in older condo and rental kitchens, thermofoil on secondary runs in 1995 to 2010 houses across River Oaks and Clearview, and high-pressure laminate on 1980s builder cabinetry.

Thermofoil Is A Vinyl Skin And Steam Is What Lifts It

Cabinet painting meets no stranger substrate than thermofoil, a printed vinyl film heat-pressed onto shaped MDF. It looks like painted wood until heat gets behind it, and then the film curls away from the board at the nearest edge.

The dishwasher is where it starts, followed by the door above the range and the panel beside a wall oven. Once a skin has lifted, cabinet painting will not stick it back down. Paint bonds to the vinyl, the vinyl keeps letting go of the MDF underneath, and the repair fails again in a season.

What Cannot Take Cabinet Painting Gets Said Before The Quote

Two honest routes exist for a door whose thermofoil has lifted. Heat will lift the film off, leaving bare MDF, though that is slow work and only sensible on a few doors, or a paintable front replaces it and is finished alongside everything else.

Particleboard boxes swollen with water under the sink are the other cabinet painting refusal. They will not hold a hinge screw and no finish changes that. Hearing it while the quote is written, instead of partway through the week, is the difference between a job that works and an argument. Replacement fronts are covered under door replacement.

Melamine And Laminate Hold Cabinet Painting Well Once Primed Correctly

Intact melamine, laminate and sound thermofoil are all good candidates. The surfaces are hard, clean and non-porous, which means nothing soaks in and everything depends on the bond.

Creating that bond falls to a waterborne primer built for glazed faces, melamine and thermofoil. A recoat can go on three or four hours later, and the bond is fully developed three or four days after that; hurrying those days is the usual reason this sort of cabinet painting lets go. Melamine is weakest at its edges, where the core sits exposed, so chips there get filled and sealed ahead of primer.

Condo And Rental Kitchens Are Where These Surfaces Cluster

Older buildings near Kerr Village and the Midtown corridor are full of melamine galley kitchens, and they take colour well for a fraction of what new cabinetry costs in a unit being kept or rented out.

Ten to twenty pieces is typical, the fronts leave so the unit stays usable, and two weeks usually covers it. The building logistics that go with it sit on the condo kitchen cabinet painting page.

Find Out Whether These Doors Can Be Painted At All

That question needs a hand laid on the doors. A free visit names the material, runs a thumb along every edge for lifting, tests the carcasses and produces a written cabinet painting quote stating plainly what it covers and what it leaves out. Write from the contact page, read the wider service list, or call +1 (289) 206-6886.

Thermofoil, Melamine and Laminate Cabinet Painting Questions

Can thermofoil that is lifting be painted?

No. Once the vinyl skin has lifted from the MDF, paint bonds to the vinyl and the vinyl keeps letting go of the board. The two honest routes are heating the film off to bare MDF, or fitting a paintable replacement front that is sprayed with the rest.

What primer goes on melamine and laminate?

A waterborne bonding primer built for glazed faces. A recoat can go on three or four hours later, and the bond is fully developed three or four days after that. Chips at melamine edges, where the core is exposed, get filled and sealed before primer.

What cannot be painted at all?

Particleboard boxes swollen by water under the sink will not hold a hinge screw, and no finish changes that. That is said while the quote is written, not partway through the week, and the quote states plainly what it covers and what it leaves out.
